Maryland Grain Producers Seek
Grant Proposals
The Maryland Grain Producers Utilization
Board (MGPUB) is seeking grant proposals from organizations
and researchers in the areas of education, market
development and research for their 2008 grant cycle. Funding
is provided through the Maryland Grain Checkoff Program,
where an assessment of one half of one percent (0.5%) is
collected on the net value of each bushel of grain sold in
the state, other than soybeans which has its own checkoff
program.
“We are committed to funding research that improves growing
conditions for efficiency and environmental benefits to meet
consumer demands for food and grain products,” states Donald
Maring, grain producer and MGPUB President. “We have been
investing in research, marketing and education for over
sixteen years. This has led to improved growing practices
and seed varieties, better understanding of both the public
and the farmer of the agricultural industry, and expanded
markets for our grain products.”
Funding priorities for 2008 include fertilizer use
efficiency and drought tolerance; the economic and
environmental value to the farmer of corn stover, canola as
a potential oilseed crop for biodiesel and cover crop; and
quantifying the real impact of corn production on the Bay.
Applications are to be postmarked by December 1, 2007, for
consideration of 2008 funding. Proposals will be evaluated
and approved at the MGPUB funding meeting in January. For
more information and Research Proposal Guidelines, contact
Lynne Hoot at 410-956-5771 or visit www.marylandgrain.com.
